The 2010 World Hurdle is the Grade 1 stayers hurdle highlight of the Cheltenham Festival.
This year’s edition of the race has produced a banker in the form of Paul Nicholls’ Big Buck’s, who’ll have his work cut out for him as he takes on a quality field in an event rarely won by the antepost favourite.
1. Big Buck’s
There’s no doubt that Big Buck’s deserves the strong backing he has for the 2010 World Hurdle. He was unbeaten in 2009, claiming a slew of Grade 1 and Grade 2 titles, including the 2009 edition of the World Hurdle. He comes into this year’s race on the back of a win in the Grade 1 Long Walk Hurdle. There are likely to be some big bets put on this entry on Thursday, with Big Buck’s trading at best odds of 8/13 at Bet365.
2. Tidal Bay
Tidal Bay doesn’t look like a serious threat to Big Buck’s title aspirations. While he’s a decent staying hurdler in his own right, his results don’t match those of the race favourite, as he comes into the 2010 World Hurdle with one win from his last three starts. This horse hit his peak in 2007 and 2008, but the fact that his most recent win came at Cheltenham is likely to attract money, particularly given that he represents good each-way value at 7/1 at totesport.
3. Karabak
Alan King’s Karabak has a knack for placing but has lost some form in recent months. The fact that he finished second to Big Buck’s in the Long Walk Hurdle in December marks him out as a decent each-way prospect, and with Paddy Power offering a price of 14/1 he’s not a bad bet to place in the 2010 World Hurdle.
The World Hurdle is rarely won by horses priced over 8/1, which means we’re looking at long shots to place rather than to win. One horse who could provide good value on a place is War of Attrition. Mouse Morris’s entry comes into the 2010 World Hurdle having claimed a brace of Grade 2 hurdles titles, and at a price of 33/1 at William Hill would return handsomely on an each-way bet if he finds the places.
It’s hard to ignore a banker like Big Buck’s and we feel he still represents good value at just under evens at Bet365. With this in mind we’ll put a single back bet on him, and back this up with an each-way bet on Karabak.
When you’re betting on a banker you’ll always want to shop around for the best possible price. Bet365 is our destination for our bet on Big Buck’s. This top rated bookie is offering a Best Price Promise throughout the Cheltenham Festival, and will beat the odds offered by an assortment of the UK’s top bookies if any of these offers a higher price on your entry.
