The 2010 Ryanair Chase is one of the Grade 1 steeplechase highlights of the 2010 Cheltenham Festival.
In 2009 the race produced a major surprise when Imperial Commander raced to victory, defeating the heavily favoured Voy Por Ustedes. This year Paul Nicholls’ talented handicap winner, Poquelin, has been tipped to claim top honours at Cheltenham.
1. Poquelin
Poquelin will be looking to take the step up from Grade 3 success to Grade 1 victory in the Ryanair Chase in 2010. Paul Nicholls’ entry has achieved a string of impressive results at Cheltenham in the 2009/2010 season, culminating in a victory in the Grade 3 Boylesports Gold Cup. He’ll have Ruby Walsh onboard for the Ryanair Chase, but many punters are likely to harbour doubts over his ability to beat a top class field. Priced best at 4/1 by Canbet he’s still a good each-way to nothing option.
2. Tranquil Sea
Unlike Poquelin, Tranquil Sea has already made a successful transition from handicaps to higher grade races. After winning the prestigious Paddy Power Gold Cup, Tranquil Sea went on to a second place in the Grade 1 Paddy Power Dial-A-Bet Chase before claiming victory in the Grade 2 Newlands Chase. With three wins and a place from his last four starts, Tranquil Sea’s 4/1 at William Hill also looks a good each-way to nothing option.
3. Barbers Shop
The Queen’s entry in the Ryanair Chase has failed to live up to a Grade 1 billing in his career to date. He’s been stepped down from the Cheltenham Gold Cup in 2010 and is yet to win a Grade 1 race in his career. He last won a race in December of 2008, but did manage a place in the 2009 King George VI Chase. Best priced at 6/1 by Paddy Power, he’ll be looking for a big improvement to break his Grade 1 duck.
A number of entries could be there or thereabouts when the dust settles on the Ryanair Chase, however, it’s worth keeping in mind that no horse priced longer than 6/1 has won this race. Could this be the year the race finally produces an upset?
If that were to happen we’d single out Golden Silver as the most likely culprit. He’s in top form having recently won a Grade 2 and Grade 1 in Ireland, before placing in his most recent Grade 2 outing at Punchestown. At 33/1 he looks well overpriced for this race and will offer top value if he places with an each-way punt.
The Ryanair Chase has been won by the favourite only once during its history. We think it’s unlikely that Poquelin will reverse this trend, and are happy to lay Paul Nicholls’ entry at Betfair. Our other option is an each-way bet on Tranquil Sea, who we think should take the race, and a speculative bet on Golden Silver to score us a tidy windfall from an each-way bet.
