The 2010 Neptune Investments Hurdle is the latest incarnation of the former Ballymore Properties Hurdle.
New sponsorship aside, the Neptune Investments Hurdle will once again be one of the novice hurdles highlight of the Cheltenham Festival, boasting an ultra-competitive field. Jockey Ruby Walsh will be gunning for his third consecutive winning ride in this 2 mile 5 furlong hurdles race in 2010.
1. Rite of Passage
The 2010 Neptune Investments Novices’ Hurdle has produced a strong antepost favourite in the shape of Dermott Weld’s Rite of Passage. A winner in his last four starts, Rite of Passage has failed to win only two races in eight starts and has finished outside the places only once in his career. His best price is the 7/2 offered by William Hill, just short of a viable each-way bet.
2. Quel Esprit:
There’s not much to separate Quel Esprit from Rite of Passage. Like the favourite, Quel Esprit has failed to win just two races in his career and has failed to place just once. His higher odds are the product of a second place in his most recent race, yet at 4/1 at William Hill he provides an each-way to nothing bet that is tough to ignore.
3. Finian’s Rainbow:
Nicky Henderson’s Finian’s Rainbow is short on experience but has class to burn. He’s claimed three wins from his four starts over hurdles and comes into the 2010 Npetune Investments Novices’ Hurdle after beating a short-odds favourite in the Hope Safe T-Bar Novices Hurdle at Ascot in February. His best price is the 7/1 on offer at Ladbrokes.
Horses priced over 20/1 rarely make an impression on the Neptune Investments Novices’ Hurdle. Aside from the favourites there are only five horses priced on or beneath this margin. Of these Peddlar’s Cross looks to be the most compelling bet. Priced 8/1 by totesport, Peddlars Cross has never lost a race despite having started as a favourite just once in his career. Nicky Henderson’s Quantitaveeasing is also worth a look, priced at 16/1 by Bodog and coming into the race with three wins from four starts.
Past trends in the Neptune Investments Novices’ Hurdle suggest that each-way bets on horses priced around the 4/1 other than the favourite are the best option. With this in mind we’ll take the 4/1 on offer on Quel Esprit for an each-way bet. We’re also tempted to put a small, speculative stake on Peddlar’s Cross to earn us a small long-shot windfall. We’ll also put an each-way bet on the favourite, Rite of Passage, a bet that will produce only a small loss if he places but fails to win.
This race looks like it could be very close. With this in mind we point punters in the direction of 888Sports Photo Finish betting special. If your selection loses the 2010 Neptune Investments Novices Hurdle in a photo finish, 888Sport will refund your losing stake up to £200/€200.
