The Freddie Williams Festival Plate has been rebranded as the Byrne Group Plate for the 2010 Cheltenham Festival.
The 2010 edition of the Festival Plate has drawn a strong field, with a number of national hunt racing’s star handicap competitors looking to score a Festival win in the penultimate race of day three.
1. Watch My Back
Ferdy Murphy’s Watch My Back heads the betting for the 2010 Byrne Group Plate. He’s a form horse having won at his last outing and has a good record in handicap chases winning one in three starts. He’ll be carrying below 11st at Cheltenham on Thursday, within the weights margin of recent winners. Priced at 8/1 by William Hill he’s a decent bet in a race paying to fourth place.
2. Song of Songs
We scratched our heads when we say Song of Songs priced second in the betting. The Irish raider hasn’t won this season and looks to have lost the form that saw him claim several victories in the 2008/2009 season. One factor that has pushed down his price is his weight of 10st 7lbs, a significantly lighter load than he has carried in recent, less successful, races. He’s best priced at 8/1 by Betfred and could be a threat if he finds his rhythm.
3. Sunnyhillboy
Sunnyhillboy looks like an interesting option. He comes into the 2010 Byrne Group Plate with three places from four starts and looks a quality handicap chaser. Jonjo O’Neill’s entry is carrying only 10st 4lbs in the race and at 10/1 at totesport merits some serious thought as an each-way bet with bookies paying to 4th place on each-way and place bets.
This is one of the best Cheltenham Festival races for backing a long shot for glory, with winners routinely priced well over the 10/1 margin. Taking a flyer, we’d mark out Phillip Hobbs’ Copper Bleu for an upset in this race. He’s shown some good form ahead of the festival with five places in five starts and has never finished outside the places in a chase. He’ll be carrying a manageable 10st 8lbs on Thursday and is trading at 20/1 at Victor Chandler.
If we’re can find Song of Songs or Watch My Back trading at low lay odds at Betfair we’ll look to lay both these entries. We’ll also go with a small each-way bet on Copper Bleu for this race as he looks like a value each-way proposition.
Do you have a Betfair account? If you don’t, you’re missing out on prices that average 15% higher than those offered by fixed odds bookmakers. What’s more you lose out on the opportunity to place lay bets on entries in handicaps, an option that allows you to win stakes in unpredictable races like the Byrne Group Plate.
