Newcastle United fluffed its lines against Swansea on the weekend, but has another chance to get back in range of the top four this week when it hosts WBA at St James’s Park.
Newcastle and WBA have clashed nine times in the last decade, with the Magpies taking 4 wins from these fixtures while WBA scooped two wins and three matches ended with level scores.
West Brom’s last trip to St. James’s Park was a goal-fest with 6 goals scored in a match that ultimately ended in a draw.
Newcastle United desperately needs to put the brakes on. Several weeks ago the club was situated in the top four, but now comes into this fixture with three losses and two draws to show for its last five matches.
After facing the likes of Man United, Man City and Chelsea during this period, it was hoped that Newcastle would bounce back against lowly Swansea, but all the Magpies managed was a goalless draw.
Newcastle’s problems start up front, where just 4 goals have been scored in five matches. Defence has been in meltdown mode, with 11 goals conceded in the same period.
West Brom’s report card looks far more impressive, with two wins, two defeats and a draw on record for the last five matches – keeping in mind that both wins came against the clubs placed in the bottom two of the Premiership league table.
West Brom has put away 7 goals in its last five matches. Defence hasn’t made the strikers’ efforts count, letting in 8 goals during the same period of time.
Newcastle can definitely play better than it has in recent weeks, and will know that it needs to get this win to prevent the season going into a tailspin.
While West Brom have shown some plucky form, they may come unstuck at St. James’s Park on Wednesday, with Newcastle certain to play with discipline and determination.
We can’t see either team playing a loose game, and think this should be a low-scoring affair. However, we like the look of Newcastle for this match, and our Newcastle United vs West Brom betting tip is to put a lay bet on WBA at Betfair.
