Chelsea crosses swords with Birmingham City at Stamford Bridge this weekend as they seek to bounce back to their shock defeat at Everton in the Premier League last weekend.
Chelsea have won six of their last ten matches against Birmingham City, while three matches have ended in draws, and Birmingham achieved a single home win. Birmingham City’s best away result against Chelsea during this period was a 1-1 draw in 2005.
Birmingham’s last visit Stamford Bridge in the 2010-11 Premier League, losing 3-1. The club last beat Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in 1963.
All is not well at Chelsea with three draws a win and a loss on record for their last five matches – with the only win coming in the FA Cup against QPR. The Blues are out of the title race, and FA Cup glory represents the last roll of the dice for the club.
To get the cup Chelsea will need to start scoring goals, with just 5 goals scored in five matches, and the Blues held scoreless in two of these. Defence has let in 6 goals during this time – a poor performance from a top team.
Birmingham City qualified for the 5th Round of the 2011-12 FA Cup with a commanding 4-0 away win over Sheffield United in the 4th round. The side have won three and drawn two of their last five matches, and are currently placed 5th in the Championship.
The Birmingham City strikers have put away 9 goals in their last five matches, but have failed to score in two matches. Where the side has shone has been on defence, with just 1 goal conceded in five games.
A strong defensive outfit isn’t what the doctor ordered for an underperforming Chelsea attack in this fixture. While the returning Didier Drogba should boost the Blues, Birmingham must believe in their ability to keep out the Chelsea forwards.
They also have reason to believe that they can outscore Chelsea, given their impressive attacking displays over recent weeks. This won’t be an easy game for Chelsea, and Birmingham may gun for the draw and a return fixture in Birmingham.
We’re going for one of the riskier bets for this Chelsea vs. Birmingham City betting tip – and that is to back the draw at Bet365. Don’t forget to use your free bet and let the bookie carry the risk!
