How to choose an online poker room

Posted on by gambling guru

Poker RoomsPlaying poker takes skill, patience, knowledge and nerve. But most importantly it’s there to be enjoyed. Nowadays there are a large number of poker sites who are all competing for your business. It can then be a bit of a challenge deciding which poker room to choose.

The good news is that there are a large amount of sites on the internet which provide high quality, independent reviews of them. This makes your job of choosing one a lot easier as obviously the more info you have, the better.

So what does a good poker room review consist of? Well this can be a number of things but will often include the following:

  1. Poker bonuses – pretty much every poker room is offering some kind of welcome bonus right now, sometimes as high as $2000, so these can be very lucrative. There are also often ongoing promotions, such as ‘bad beat bonuses’ and payouts for hitting hands like Royal Flushes. So it definitely pays to know the amount that’s on offer and also how to actually get your hands on it.
  2. Software – the more poker you intend to play, the more important this factor is. If you’re going to be spending hours on end playing on your favourite site, you need to make sure the room’s software is user-friendly, stable and reliable. You’ll find quite often that a good poker room review also includes screenshots of the software so you can see what everything looks like before you try it for yourself.
  3. Loyalty / reward program – it’s all well and good earning a hefty first time deposit bonus but what does the poker room do to reward you for keeping your business on the site? A good poker review will tell you the information about this; some poker sites offer daily cashback for example, whereas some of the bigger sites like PokerStars offer their players ‘stores’ where you can save up your Player Points and then cash them in for a whole range of items.
  4. Customer service – this is very important – you don’t want to be dealing with some shady gaming company who doesn’t know how to look after its customers – it’s really important that they offer you a range of methods to enable you to get in contact with them. Often poker rooms will include ‘live chat’, email and telephone support and significantly this is usually on a 24/7 basis so they’re there whenever you need them to be. Again, a good poker site review will have tested them out and be able to report back as to how good they ‘scored’ in this area.
  5. Game selection – you’ll find that any poker room online will offer the most popular formats which are of course Texas Hold’em and Omaha. But what if you’re after something a little less common, such as Stud, Draw or even Badugi? It’s no good signing up for a poker room and only then finding out they don’t offer what you want. Poker site reviews will let you know this beforehand, and also perhaps a bit about what stakes are on offer. Not every poker site will be appropriate for every poker player – some of us enjoy the micro-stakes whilst for some it’s really important that a room offers the biggest games in the world as they play for a living.
  6. Deposit options – for many players this isn’t a big issue as they just want to use a credit or debit card, which are widely, if not universally, accepted by poker sites across the world. But if you have some funds on, perhaps, your PayPal account, you may want to use this method. A poker room review will tell you in advance which methods are supported so you can make an informed choice rather than doing the searching yourself.

So in essence, then, in poker everything is important, so it’s worthwhile taking the time to read through a few reviews to help you decide which poker room to try out. These are usually written by fellow poker players who really know what they’re talking about and it will save you plenty of time doing your own research.

Most of all, have fun and enjoy whichever poker site you choose, and good luck at the tables!
