With the unforeseen events of “Black Friday” permanently altering the high stakes online poker landscape, several of the big ballers of previous years have had to step aside for a group of previously less known players who are taking over the spotlight as 2011 draws to a close.
With the indictments against Full Tilt Poker and some of the former poker giants, professional High Stakes Poker players from across the USA as well as other countries have established their own ways to continue grinding away. A substantial amount of prominent poker players have opted for live multi-table tournaments or brick and mortar high stakes poker cash games. Players are also migrating to different online rooms that can sustain sufficient PLO and NLHE traffic at the cutthroat $25/$50 and $50/$100 6-Max Pot-Limit Omaha tables.
Names such as Rui “PepperoniF” Cao, Gavin “gavz101” Cochrane, Jens “Jeans89” Kyllonen, Benny “toweliestar” Spindler and Rafi “refaelamit” Amit have all been consistently showing up on the money leaderboard this year. These hyper-aggressive young grinders mainly focusing on high stakes, deep-stacked PLO games with blinds often reaching up to $100/ $200.
With the exodus of US players, a market has been created for companies who help players to relocate to Canada and Europe to continue playing poker online.
Some of the famed figures of US high stakes poker, such as Phil Galfond (who plays under ““MrSweets28” on PokerStars) and Brian “$tinger 88″ Hastings, have elected to relocate to Canada in order to continue grinding and have seen considerable success so far.
Tom “durrrr” Dwan and some of the other Full Tilt Poker heavyweights have been trying their luck at the ultra high stakes games against rich Chinese businessman in the city of Macau, although Dwan’s success at the tables in the past few months is debatable.
After an unexplained three-month hiatus from the tables, Viktor Blom is back in full force at the tables this month. Although his swings tend to be remarkably large even for these stakes, Blom seems to have pulled together a tidy profit for himself before Christmas. Renowned European grinder Ilari Sahamies (“Ilari FIN” on PokerStars) from Helsinki, Finland has been consistently pulling in a profit and appears to be dominating the completion on PokerStars at the moment.
