The World Hurdle is the feature race of the day three at the 2011 Cheltenham Festival. The race features the Festival’s biggest banker, as Big Bucks looks to reward scores of backers by winning the race for the third time.
1. Big Buck’s
Big Buck’s has won 10 hurdles races on the trot – so it’s no surprise to find this horse trading close to evens in the 2011 World Hurdle betting markets. Since winning the World Hurdle in 2010 he’s also won the Liverpool Hurdle and Big Walk Hurdle, and there’s little doubt we’re looking at the finest staying hurdler in recent memory. At 11/10 at Ladbrokes he invites a solid back bet.
2. Grand Crus
Grand Crus has won 4 and placed in 2 of his six starts over hurdles. In January he claimed the Grade 2 2011 Cleeve Hurdle, and looks to have plenty of promise. he could surprise Big Buck’s on Thursday, but doesn’t offer any real value at a best price of 11/4.
3. Mourad
Mourad is an experienced campaigner over hurdles, with 5 wins and 7 shows from 14 starts. He’s done most of his racing in Ireland, and made his only Cheltenham Festival appearance in 2009, when he finished 3rd in the Triumph Hurdle. He’s never won an Irish Grade 1, but has two consecutive Grade 2 wins on record coming into this race. Trading at 10/1 at Bet365 he’s the only top 3 entry offering each-way value.
The World Hurdle isn’t often a race for outsiders. However, one horse who may just do the job at longer odds is Celestial Halo, who won the Triumph Hurdle at Cheltenham in 2008, and finished 3rd in the Champion Hurdle in 2009. He’s never really been tested over a staying distance, but he definitely has class to burn, and is going for a tempting 28/1 at Bet365.
Big Buck’s is going to be watched very closely by punters and bookies alike in this race, but we’ll distance ourselves from the favourite, and throw our lot in with Mourad, who we’re hoping is going to reward us with a top three finish.
