The 2011 Supreme Novices Hurdle serves its customary role of getting the racing action underway at Cheltenham this year, as some of the sport’s most promising hurdlers set off on a 2 mile trip around Cheltenham Racecourse.
1. Cue Card
Cue Card is the horse that has tongues wagging in 2011. Colin Tizzard’s charge has won four of his five starts, and finished second in the remaining race. What’s more, three of his wins were achieved on the Cheltenham turf. The only problem with this candidate is that he finished second in his most recent race, losing by over 4 lengths to antepost favourite, Menorah, in the Stanjames.com International Hurdle. At a best price of 9/4 at Bet365 he’s a worthy back bet, but offers no value on each way punts. We fancy him as a better option in the lay betting markets at Betfair.
2. Spirit Son
Spirit Son is an interesting candidate. This French raider began his career in France, has raced three times over hurdles and is unbeaten coming to Cheltenham. He’s no stranger to the race distance, but has no experience over the Cheltenham turf. He’s going for 6/1 across the board, which marks him as an excellent each way proposition, but much will depend on how he takes to conditions at Cheltenham on the 15th. One to keep an eye on.
3. Sprinter Sacre
Nicky Henderson introduces another French raider into the mix. Sprinter Sacre heads to the festival with four wins and a second place in five races – a record to rival the favourite. Where he differs is in his testing ground, as he’s got two of his wins at Ascot and will be racing at Cheltenham for the first time. Betfair has him priced at 8/1 for this race, which looks like serious value on each way punts.
The top three aren’t the only handy hurdlers in the race, and there are half a dozen entries who could easily take the first race of the festival. Recession Proof catches the eye with four wins and a second from his last five races. This horse has tons of experience, but has only just changed to hurdles from the flat. At a price of 10/1 at Ladbrokes he’s a top each-way option.
Our 2011 Supreme Novices’ Hurdle tactic is to look for value on the higher priced entries. While Cue Card looks like a good favourite, you’ll get better value on the places. With this in mind our 2011 Supreme Novices’ Hurdle betting tip is to put your money on an each way bet on Sprinter Sacre – an entry whose price will shorten as the festival approaches. Those in the mood for a speculative punt could do worse than a small each-way stake on Recession Proof.
