The Cheltenham Gold Cup is the Festival’s biggest race, and promising to be another thriller in 2011 with three previous winners taking on Long Run in a battle for national hunt supremacy.
1. Imperial Commander
In 2010 Imperial Commander was gifted the Gold Cup when Kauto Star fell in that race. He’s raced only twice since then, unseating his rider in the totesport Bowl a few weeks later, before winning the Betfair Chase in the new season. Ladbrokes has him best priced at 7/2, but there are real questions about his temperament and ability to deliver consistent results.
2. Long Run
Long Run finished an unremarkable 3rd in the Ryanair Chase at Cheltenham in 2010. He has since come on in leaps and bounds, taking another third against quality opposition in the Paddy Power Gold Cup at Cheltenham, before winning one of the biggest Group 1s in the UK as he took the King George VI Chase, beating Kauto Star. This horse has never finished outside the top three in a chase, and looks like very decent value at 5/1 at Ladbrokes.
3. Kauto Star
Kauto Star was hugely disappointing in the King George, where he looked to have lost a yard of pace. This horse has performed best with Ruby Walsh onboard, and the two will be reunited after his abortive partnership with Tony McCoy. Horseracing romantics will be hoping he wins this, but pragmatists will note that he offers super each-way value at 6/1 at William Hill. Whatever his form, Kauto Star must still be good for a place.
Midnight Chase looks like he offers the best value of the rest of the field. He’s new to Grade 1 chases, but has won four handicaps on the trot coming into this race. At a price of 14/1, he certainly worth a look to make the top three.
We think Kauto Star has been overpriced for this race, as he must still be good enough to place, and with Ruby Walsh on board could even take a famous win. Our 2011 Cheltenham Festival betting tip is therefore to go with an each-way punt on Kauto Star.
