The Champion Hurdle is the opening feature race of the 2011 Cheltenham Festival, bringing together the UK’s finest hurdlers for a 2 mile long dash over the Cheltenham fences. 2010 Champion Hurdle winner, Binocular, emerged as the favourite for this race, but dismayed punters when he was pulled from the race.
1. Binocular
After finishing 3rd in the 2009 Champion Hurdle, Binocular finished the job in 2010 beating antepost favourite Khyber Kim to win the race. His form has held since then with a 3rd place in the Fighting Fifth Hurdle followed by a win in the Grade 1 Christmas Hurdle before taking a more modest win in a listed hurdles race. Binocular was pulled from the 2011 Champion Hurdle two days before the meeting commenced.
2. Hurricane Fly
Hurricane Fly lies second in the 2011 Champion Hurdle betting markets. He’s easily Ireland’s top hurdler, with his win in the Punchestown Champion Hurdle followed by three more Grade 1 wins. This horse has never run in Britain, and will be having his first outing at Cheltenham on the 15th. Betfred has him priced at 5/1 for this race, which makes him the stand out each-way punt for the 2011 Champion Hurdle.
3. Menorah
Menorah rounds off the top three for the Champion Hurdle. Interest in him is powered by his win in the 2010 Supreme Novices’ Hurdle – and he has since followed through with a Grade 2 win in the International Hurdle and a Grade 3 win in the Greatwood Hurdle. Three of Menorah’s last four races have been run at Cheltenham, which suggests he shouldn’t suffer any nerves on the day and could give the favourites plenty to think about. At a price of 5/1 at Paddy Power he’s well worth a look.
If there’s one horse in the field who is hard to ignore it is Peddlar’s Cross. The winner of the 2010 Neptune Novices’ Hurdle followed his success at Cheltenham with a win at the 2010 Aintree Mersey Hurdle, before winning the prestigious Fighting Fifth Hurdle and claiming another win at Kelso in the Morebattle Hurdle. Peddlar’s Cross has won six out of six starts and offers super value at 11/2 at Paddy Power.
Our 2011 Champion Hurdle betting tip is to put a generous each way bet on Peddlar’s Cross, who looks the biggest threat in the field.
