The Arkle Challenge Trophy is the first chase of the 2011 Cheltenham Festival and the second Grade 1 event of the meeting. Some of the UK’s top up-and-coming 2 mile chasers will be featured in this high-value event.
1. Medermit
Alan King’s Medermit heads the betting for the 2011 Arkle Challenge Trophy. This horse ran over hurdles the last time he appeared at the Festival, finishing 7th in the Champion Hurdle. He’s since graduated to fences and looks handy with two wins and a second place from his last three starts. His win at the recent Grade 1 Scilly Isles Novices’ Chase marked him out as one to watch, but at a price of 3/1 at Bet365, he’s probably best value as a lay bet.
2. Finian’s Rainbow
Nicky Henderson fields Irish raider, Finian’s Rainbow in the 2011 Arkle Challenge Trophy. This entry comes into the Arkle on the back of three consecutive wins, with his most recent a Grade 2 at Warwick. While his record impresses, his victories have come against small fields, and he could easily be crowded out of the Arkle. Bookies have him trading within range of an each-way to nothing lay bet, with William Hill offering best odds of 4/1. At this price we think there are others offering better value.
3. Ghizao
Ghizao completes the top three, with Paul Nicholls’ entry coming into the Arkle after two wins and a place from three starts over fences. What marks him out is the fact that two of these results were achieved at Cheltenham, and we know he’ll be familiar with conditions on Cheltenham Tuesday. Trading at 9/2 at Betfair, he’s our pick for an each-way punt in the Arkle Challenge Trophy.
Several entries could storm to a win in the Arkle. West With the Wind caught our eye with four wins and three second places from his seven starts over fences. While he’s never raced at Cheltenham, this sort of record is hard to ignore in a horse trading as high as 66/1 at Paddy Power. At this price he’s a very tempting each-way option.
Our 2011 Arkle Challenge Trophy is to go each-way on Ghizao to show in this race. While he may not take the race, he looks good enough for a place, and those looking for extra value need look no further than West With the Wind.
