Ireland have a good opportunity to bounce back from their defeat to Wales three weeks ago when they host Italy at the Aviva Stadium on Saturday.
Ireland and Italy have clashed seven times in the last five years, with Ireland winning all of these matches. Strangely enough, Italy has played better in Dublin than it has in Rome, losing two of its matches in Dublin by less than 7 points.
However, Italy’s last visit to Dublin wasn’t a case in point, as the Italians lost by 18 points.
Ireland were unlucky losers to Wales in the first round of the Six Nations, and were then left to literally cool their heels when their match against France was postponed minutes before kick off due to a frozen pitch.
The break from action will give Ireland a chance to regather and plot their comeback in the tournament, and there is no better place to start than an Italian side who have struggled against the Irish in the past.
The Italians, meanwhile, came painfully close to opening their Stadio Olympico account with a win over England. However, a mistake in their 22 handed Charlie Hodgson the winning try.
There was enough in that match to suggest that Italy are slowly but surely evolving into a threatening side. However, they’re still a poor road on the side, and their confidence won’t be peaking after two consecutive Six Nations defeats.
Ireland look fairly solid for this match, and the Italians don’t look like they’re in with a real shout of winning.
Best betting value will be found in the handicap betting markets. Bookies have given the Italians a +14.5 handicap, which looks like a bad miscalculation given their performance a fortnight ago, and their strong performances in Dublin over the last few seasons.
Our Ireland vs. Italy betting tip is to take the value on this bet and go with a back bet on the Italians at +14.5 for odds of 4/5 at Bet365.
