Ireland has an opportunity to scupper the Grand Slam ambitions of its old enemy when it hosts England for the first time at the Aviva Stadium on Saturday afternoon. A loss to Ireland would open the door for Wales to snatch the Six Nations title from beneath England’s nose.
Ireland’s been dominant over England in recent seasons, beating England in four of their last five Six Nations encounters. England’s only win came at Twickenham, which is the only place England has beaten Ireland since 2003.
England’s last trip to Dublin produced a one point win for the Irish. These types of close margins have been common, with three matches won by a four points or less.
Ireland’s still struggling to find form with three wins and two losses to show for its last five matches. The side lacks the killer instinct that took it to the Grand Slam in 2009, and was shown up by a clinical Wales in Cardiff last weekend.
The Ireland try machine is still functioning, however, with 10 tries scored in the side’s last five matches. The Irish have also managed to keep matches close with their 6 point loss to Wales their biggest defeat of the new year.
England, meanwhile, has won four of its last five matches and is on track for a Grand Slam if it puts away Ireland in Dublin for the first time since 2003.
The English are showing the sort of form that took them to World Cup glory in 2003, and have crossed the whitewash 13 times in the last five matches. The side looks strong and balanced, but hasn’t been comprehensively tested away from home this season.
This match is going to be a thriller that could go anyway. England should be the favourite for the match, but Ireland are going to keep this encounter close and scrappy.
The stats tell us that a 5 point game is the likely outcome of this fixture, which means the handicap markets are the place to look for value.
Our Ireland vs. England betting tip is to take the 8/13 that Betfred is offering on England with a -1 handicap in this match.
