Belmont Stakes Betting Tips

The oldest race in the American Triple Crown series is one of America’s biggest thoroughbred racing events. Coverage of the event can eclipse that of the Kentucky Derby, especially when a racehorse entered into the event is on the verge of earning a Triple Crown title.

Like the other Triple Crown races, the Belmont Stakes receives extensive coverage from bookmakers around the world. Parimutuel betting markets in the United States grow to enormous proportions, whilst online bookmakers offer a variety of fixed odds betting markets for the Belmont Stakes.

The Belmont Stakes isn’t called the ‘Test of the Champion’ without a reason. The step-up in performance required at Belmont Park represents a significant challenge to America’s finest thoroughbreds, and punters have to do their homework if they wish to make smart bets for the final race of the American Triple Crown:

Belmont Stakes Tips

  • The Belmont Stakes is notorious for producing long-odds winners, with obscure racehorses having a tendency to prove themselves as quality stayers when least expected.
  • Conversely, antepost favourites have a very poor record in the Belmont Stakes, almost to the extent that it is rarely worth backing the odds-on favourite for an outright win. About 2 in 10 Belmont Stakes antepost favourites win the race.
  • There will often be a very strong backing for a Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes winner when it enters the race. The prospect of a Triple Crown can catapult betting markets into a state of frenzy, and this is precisely the time when punters should instead look at longer odds runners in parimutuel betting markets – keeping in mind that the Triple Crown was last achieved in 1978.
  • Around 70% of Belmont Stakes winners enter the race priced below 7/1 in the antepost betting markets. It is nevertheless worth keeping an eye open for promising stayers priced further back in the betting markets.
  • Winners of the Preakness Stakes (without a win in the Kentucky Derby) have a mediocre record in the Belmont Stakes, with around 2 out of 10 Preakness Stakes winners achieving a win at Belmont. It is quite common for Belmont Stakes winners to have won no other graded race in their 3 year old season before taking victory at Belmont Park.
